The Nike Metcon 5 Trainers – A Review

Nike Metcon 5

It has been a while since my last review but here I am – I am back. This time I will review the Metcon 5 trainers from Nike. I have been wanting to do this review for a long time now so here it is….

Over the last few years I have been a regular gym user and recently intensified my workout regime, especially in terms of squatting. I fell in love with it! A friend recommended the Metcon 5 trainers. Initially, I wanted to do a review of the “No Bull” trainers, but they never seemed to have my size, so I went for the Metcon 5 instead.

What made me curious is that these shoes have special soles (the so called Hyperlift inserts) which you can insert before squatting heavy weights. These promise more stability and allow for more weights to be lifted. After your workout you can then easily remove the soles from the shoes. I wasn’t sure if this would actually work, but I decided to give it a try!

The Metcon 5 Trainers arrived

I paid around 135 Euros for the Metcon 5 trainers, and I got the blue and black ones. Those were the only ones they had in the store 🙂 Oh boy do they look good. After putting them on for the first time, I immediately noticed how much more stability they offered, especially in the back of the foot. This will definitely help when doing squats. The “Hyperlift inserts” have a soft surface with a firm core to keep your foot in place. The materials are very good in terms of quality and sturdiness. After lacing up, you will notice that the Metcon 5 fit like a glove!

Testing the Metcon 5 Trainers in the wild

I couldn’t wait to test the Metcons in the gym with a solid and heavy squat session. I inserted the Hyperlift insoles into the shoes for my first try. It seemed unusual, at first, but I quickly got used to it and I can say they really do help. Especially when you are at the bottom of your squat and you push up, the inner soles give support and provide stability. The wide and thick sole provides a good grip which you need to push heavy weights. After performing my squat session with the Nike Metcon 5 trainers I can say they really are beneficial. They provide the right grip and stability needed to perform in the gym.

On the other hand I would not recommend them for running. In my opinion the sole is too soft to run long distances and would tire your foot easily. These shoes are also heavier than your average running shoe and lack the necessary padding needed to run comfortably and safely. The Metcons are created specifically for lifting weights in the gym and are ideal for this purpose. They are not great for other sports.

My overall experience and verdict

After having used the Nike Metcon 5 Trainers for several months now, I can really say they are worth the money. Not only do they look good but they do the job they are supposed to do. They fit well and the quality and build is great, along with the interchangeable Hyperlift inserts. The Nike Metcon 5 Trainers are worth their money and make a difference when working out in the gym. If you are a regular gym-goer and enjoy lifting heavy as well as squatting, then these are the shoes for you.

I am aware that there is a new version available now, the Metcon 6 Trainers. In its basics, it is the same as the Metcon 5. If you should have any questions please do not hesitate and contact me here.
